Developing Evidence-based Risk Profiles for Public Policy and Decision Making

Event Summary

Organization: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Speakers

  • Jianping Yan, Disaster Risk Assessment Specialist, UNDP

Description

Different decision and policy makers needs and requires different types of hazard, risk and disaster information for their respective development processes. In order for the risk information to be effective and actionable, risk assessment should be designed and conducted in terms of the end users’ specific needs and requirements for risk information. This Focus Day event systematically discussed typologies of key risk profiles and introduced different ways of building risk profiles for two groups of users – Development Planning and Disaster Management. On this basis, we worked together with the participants to systematically review a number of the typical types of hazard and risk information products and discussed their possible use in different decision making contexts. Presenters included producers and users of risk information to bring forth perspectives from the two sides. The session also examined the issues and challenges emerging in the generation and use of evidence-based risk profiles, based on UNDP’s practice in more 50 countries.
