Bio
Alex de Sherbinin is a senior researcher at the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), a research and data center of the Earth Institute at Columbia University that utilizes scientific data and information technology to advance understanding of how humans affect and manage the environment, and in turn, how environmental variability and change affect society. He is deputy manager of the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) operated by CIESIN, chair of the CODATA Global Roads Data Development Task Group, and coordinator of the Population-Environment Research Network of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP), a network of 1,800 social and natural scientists around the world. Mr. de Sherbinin is a geographer whose research interests focus on the human dimensions of global environmental change from local to global scales. He has published widely on a range of topics: population dynamics and the environment; climate change vulnerability; remote sensing applications; environmental indicators; consumption impacts on the environment; urban sustainability; and community-based natural resource management. He has edited two volumes, Water and Population Dynamics: Case Studies and Policy Implications (AAAS, 1998) and Urban Population-Development-Environment Dynamics in Developing Countries (CICRED, 2009), and is a co-author of Our People, Our Resources (IUCN, 1997). Prior to joining CIESIN he served as a Population-Environment Fellow with the Social Policy Program of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Gland, Switzerland, and a Population Geographer at the Population Reference Bureau (PRB), Washington, DC. He also served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mauritania, West Africa. Mr. de Sherbinin studied geography at Dartmouth College and Syracuse University.
