Spatial analysis of natural hazard and climate variability risks in peri-urban areas of Dakar

The project used GIS, household survey data and urban mapping to create a comprehensive list of natural hazard and climate change risks in Dakar.  A detailed risk assessment using satellite-based hazard data and community-based vulnerability data was carried out for urban and peri-urban Dakar.  The risk assessment recommended ways to improve prevention and mitigation of natural hazard risk as the urban areas rapidly expanded beyond their current jurisdictions. The risk assessment had two outcomes: 1) A package of options for disaster risk management plans, and 2) A spatial diagnostic of key risks associated with urban growth scenarios.
