Global Earthquake Model (GEM)

GEM is a public-private partnership initiated and approved by the Global Science Forum of the OECD and is supported by the World Bank and many other public and private organisations . GEM will create the first global, open-source model for seismic risk assessment at a national and regional scale. The model, whose first version is expected for 2013, will be a critical instrument to support decisions and actions on earthquake risk mitigation worldwide. The model integrates state-of-the-art knowledge on Hazard, Risk, and Socio-Economic Impact and will be accessible to a full spectrum of users worldwide through an intuitive user-interface: (online) software and tools.

The GEM Outreach Meeting 2010 was part of the Understanding Risk forum and took place on June 3-4.

GEM showcased the development of state-of-the art, user-intuitive tools for global earthquake risk assessment through community participation and provided a proof-of-concept of the model, by demonstrating first seismic hazard and risk calculations on a global scale. Take a look at the presentations page for detailed information.

Many questions were posed and discussions were held, and we will be posting them here, to stimulate even more discussion. So please don't hesitate and share you ideas and opinions!

can any one help to get step by step information on earthquake damage scenario study

GEM has launched an online review of its Request for Proposal (RfP) for the modelling of socio-economic impacts (SEI) of earthquakes.
We invite all to participate in the review(http://www.globalquakemodel.org/node/1025) and to encourage others to do so as well.

I guess I was so busy with email I forgot to post... Anyway, I thought the overall UR conference, the GEM meeting, and RHoK 1.0 were all absolutely awesome (and not in the teenage sense of the word). I'm not sure I can express my appreciation for all the people who organized and participated, but I'm certainly glad they did. Between the people, the topics, and the weekend hackathon, it was the best experience I've had in many years.

For Stephen: thanks for your comments. It is certainly good that you will be there, as much will become clear during the meeting. However I am sure that more people are curious about these issues, so I will do my best to answer the questions. You are correct that we haven't published much on the website about model validation. As is the case with more issues, they are under constant development. GEM started well over a year ago and already then there were ideas on model validation. However over the course of year a lot has been learned and the ideas continuously expanding community and collaborators are converging. A GEM Model Facility will start operating soon which will work on issues like this, now that an initial model building architecture and GEM engine have been designed within scope of the GEM1 project. Soon therefore I think we can start expanding on the Model Facility and activities that will be carried out within its mandate. Interactions between global components and regional programmes (and the Model Facility) that both are essential parts within the entire GEM undertaking will also have an important impact on model validation. This will therefore also be discussed during the Outreach Meeting. A first User-Needs-Assessment (UNA) has been carried out, that was mainly focused on expert users and revealed some interesting points. Also this UNA was part of the GEM1 project, a project which the results will be published in the form of technical reports a general summary and extensive reporting on the website. We think further user assessments are needed however and are working on that, and expect to also get insight from input of various types of end-users during the Outreach Meeting. These assessments, but also through the open-source community-based development platforms and other community-consulting initiatives, a set of requirements will develop for the model to meet user needs.

Just as a follow-up, I found the GMPE selection report, and some good documentation on the opensha.org site that seems to address at least some of my questions. Good stuff...

For Sushil: thank you for your comment. Will you be able to attend the GEM part of the Understanding Risk Forum? It would be good to have you in the audience.
Stephen Arnold

I'm happy to be able to attend the conference, especially the GEM meeting; I guess I have several questions that I couldn't find any details about on the GEM website. They include things like model validation, turning stakeholder needs into requirements specifications, etc. Any pointers to additional technical information would be great.
