Welcome to a discussion forum about developing an Earthquake Rating System for Building Performance

This forum will discuss the feasibility and application of a rating system for measuring building performance during a future earthquake.

The focus for this discussion forum will be to gain insight and understanding from a broad base of stakeholders about the feasibility of an earthquake rating system for building performance.  For example: Will building owners or tenants find a rating system useful in their decision-making? For what purposes will the greater community find such a system useful?  Encouraging retrofits?  Emergency preparedness? Insurance or loan underwriting?  Should an earthquake rating system be mandatory, or voluntary?

We are excited about moderating this broad discussion and look forward to stimulating conversations as a means to develop the larger themes and discussions.

Your active participation will help create the agenda for an invitational workshop to be held in March 2011. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is funding this effort, led by the Applied Technology Council (ATC), to initiate this group discussion and a corresponding workshop agenda. We are looking for broad input from this forum to highlight key issues associated with the major idea of developing an earthquake rating system.

Thank you for your participation,

Ron Mayes and Kate Stillwell
