Dear Joaquin

I recently joined this UR group after having received notification about it from you. The timing is fortuitous for me, since I just published a book that summarizes what various sciences have found about why we perceive risk the way we do. "How Risky Is It, Really? Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts." I would like to make the group aware of it, a I think they will find it interesting, and I'd like to get their feedback. But I don't want my first comment here to sound so self-serving so I ask for your advice on how to handle this.
By the way, tell me more about what you do.

I just heard about the World Bank conference today, at a National Academies of Sciences committee meeting where we thinking about how to write messages for the new U.S. cel phone based emergency alert system. John Harrald tole me about it. Is the agenda set. Are all the speakers arranged for. I'd love to find a way to present on the topic of risk perception. It' so important, and so often overlooked. who would I contact about that?

Meanwhile, I have a question about my book. Do you or does anyone else know of any other books out there that try to summarize what the various sciences have learned about the psychology of risk perception. I have written one, "How Risky Is it, Really? Why Our Fears Don't Always Match the Facts", which was just published, by McGraw Hill. The only other books I can find on risk perception are "The Perception of Risk" edited by Paul Slovic and Ragnar Lofstedt, which is an academic collection of journal articles, and Dan Gardner's "The Science of Fear" which frankly doesn't cover a lot of the territory.

I suppose this is a question best asked of the risk perception and communication subgroup.

Joaquin

I was excited to learn through Mark that I might be able to present on the psychology of risk perception at the conference June 2. Can you contact me by my regular email address so we can discuss a few of the details? thanks
David
